DISCUSSION QUESTION #16: 12/11

DISCUSSION QUESTION #16:  How has this book study made you a better teacher?  How will you spread the message of this book to others?

53 comments:

  1. I think the different hooks have made me a better teacher. I tend to do many of the same things when I work with small groups, but the hooks and their questions made me think about different ways to engage students. I hadn’t considered most of the hooks that the author mentioned in the book, and I thought the questions with each one very helpful. I found myself considering each one and how I could use that hook with students.

I think that by trying the hooks and the PIRATE ideology, I’ll have experience. When something works for me, I share it with others. I share it with teachers and support staff. If it works for me, it can work for them 

    1. I would have to agree that the different hooks have made me a better teacher as well. There are some that I have used in the past but many that I haven't and am excited to try incorporated into my lessons.

    2. I had never thought about trying some of the hooks....and wished I had known about these five years ago.... The practical examples made the hooks more doable.

    3. I agree! I now have the book to refer to and see what hook will work for each student.

    4. It so nice to have the book but also having each other and General ed teacher to share experiences with and get ideas from them.

    5. I agree that the different hooks have really opened up the different ways I can engage my students.

  2. Learning about the different hooks, and especially the examples that other teachers have shared has been helpful to me and sparked my imagination with ideas to use in my classroom. I really appreciate to learn from the best of this blog.

    1. Yes- examples from other teachers on this blog has been the biggest help for me too! I am using one of them over the next 2 weeks :)

    2. The hooks were a great concept to have, and he had a lot of them presented to the reader!!

    3. The ideas from the other teachers have been wonderful for me in my first year!

  3. I like the different hooks, I think I end up using the same ones repeatedly. I need to branch out and experiment more with other hooks. Sharing success stories can provide ideas for others to try something new.

    1. Sharing success stories is very encouraging and helps to get the ideas going...

    2. Share success is helpful to all and maybe will help those who feel unwilling to try new things because of failure or are stuck in their ways

    3. I used to use the same hooks over and over too. The school district I work for did this book last year and we all got little flip books so I carry it around and use it often. Now I find myself using others too!

    4. I'm the same way - I tend to use what has worked in the past instead of trying something new. I want to try as many as I can now!

  4. I think the book made me a better teacher by allowing me the time to reflect on how I actively engage my students. It made me want to become more creative in my teaching. Overall, it gave me some new ideas that I was able to implement into my daily teaching to help better engage all learners.

    1. This books as helped me to be reflect on engagement as well. I feel that many days I am rushing to get everything in and this book has helped to draw my focus to slowing down and really actively engaging students.

    2. Great point.... I have done a lot of reflecting throughout reading this book as well. I need to be better at writing them down, and also keeping a notebook like Dave talks about for keeping track of new ideas.
Self reflection is such a powerful tool!

    3. This book gave me the inspiration to make my instruction more exciting. I think the notebook is a great idea. I tend to get new ideas and think...I'll do that, but get bogged down with work and forget.

  5. Learning about the different hooks has helped me expand my thinking on ways that would help cement concepts in a student's mind. I already do some of them, but it would be good for me to add a few more to my teacher tool bag.

I like sharing ideas with others. If I find something that really works with one of my students, and it will transition to the classroom, I will share that with his/her teacher

  6. This book has helped to to consider and think more about the enthusiasm I bring to the classroom and to teaching. I really enjoyed reading the sections on the hooks and different ways to engage students. This will and has been beneficial to my teaching. I plan to share the hooks with other teachers. I have already shared some of them with my student teacher for her future reference.

    1. I love the hooks too. I think collaborating and doing hook ideas with other teachers might even be motivating to actually get them done, not just add it to the to do list. Your student teacher is a lucky girl!

    2. I'm having a student teacher in the spring. I think I will share what I can with her and maybe buy her the book as a gift. I still have the poetry book my cooperating teacher bought me - 25 years ago!

    3. I enjoyed reading about the hooks also. It made me realize that some of the activities I'm doing actually have a name to them, therefore it allowed me to be able to change them up and make them better.

    4. I like inspiration from the book too! I love it when I try one of these hooks and see the sparkle in the student's eyes! It's like they can hardly wait for what happens next. That's what I love about teaching.

  7. I am not a teacher, but I work side by side with teacher every day. Some of them have seen me reading this book while walking through the hallway (which is a safety hazard so please do not try it). I have also been caught reading it between SIT meetings. Laying the book on the table when teachers are present have sparked many conversations about the pirate approach and the hooks he talks about. I have had teachers ask to borrow the book when I am done with it. One teacher stated that she is going to read it over the summer so she can come up with ideas for her class. I loved the energy this book promotes. It seems like I felt reenergized after reading it. I feel like I will attempt to utilize some of the hooks when I am working with students. I would also like to escape from the paperwork and become more involved with students. This book empowered and enlightened me. I am glad I stumbled upon it.

  8. Not to be afraid to try new things, even if others are going to judge you and to push myself to be more creative is how this book has made me better.

  9. It has definitely sparked my motivation and made me think beyond what I know. It got me excited to try new things.. ask myself questions rather than just the students. I loved reading about his hooks. I want to challenge myself more and get my students excited about my class and learning in general.
I have already read sections of the book to other teachers and told them about it. I have told my mom about it too, I told her I would give it to her when I was done. I'll see her over Christmas break to give to her. I want to tell my principal about it too. I think it is such a positive book that can help bring excitement back into the classroom.

  10. The main idea I got from the book was to be thinking outside of the box!! Always look for something different to engage students. The hook are an added bonus to have and use, save teachers the time of coming up with them.
Hope to loan my book to others so they can get ideas from it. Since it is an easy read I can easily recommend it!

  11. This book was so nice to read - especially as a break from all of my Masters' books! It was exciting to hear his passion for teaching, which really rejuvenated my own. We have several teachers who went to see Dave speak and presented on him to the district, so Teach Like a Pirate is common vocabulary here at Greeley County :) I am looking forward to incorporating more of these strategies into my classroom as I build my seminar program.

  12. The hooks and the book have made a difference in how I look at all my teaching. Trying to get the students more engaged. I love reading all the ideas that have appeared in this blog.
Ways to Share principles in this book is to be willing to share with your fellow staff and to recommend the workshop to all your teaching friends.

  13. The book has made me try to think more outside the box when planning lessons for my students. I try to think of ways to use the hooks and different ways to reach the same lesson that can get them engaged in multiple ways. I try to tell my teacher friends about something I did that I really liked or that my students really like. I enjoyed reading the book!

  14. Like all the others the different hooks have given me alot of ideas. I see what hooks I am already using and what hooks are still out there for me to use. Reading about his passion and enthusiasm has helped renew my passion and enthusiasm. This has been one of my favorite book studies so far! I am looking foward to the part 2/sequel next semester.

  15. I love the blogs from others because it helps to toss around and hear other people’s ideas. It is also good to hear other people struggle with some of the same concerns. It was good to read about different ways to bring ideas into the classroom. How each of us interrupt the ideas is always interesting to hear too.

  16. I think learning about all the different kinds of hooks will help me become a better teacher. I have already used several of them and continue trying to think of ways to use the ones I've never tried before. I always think I'm not that creative, so I love how he says that being creative is a skill you have to develop. I think that changed my attitude about doing creative things in the classroom a lot. So, I might not be the most creative, but I can become more creative! This is a small thing, but instead of the students getting materials, etc. as they need them during the class, I have started doing as Dave suggests and having them gather everything they need at the beginning so it doesn't disrupt the flow of the class. I have already shared some ideas on Facebook, and I have shared some with my fellow teachers. I felt it was definitely a good use of my time and it has changed my teaching.

  17. I think by reading this book and other people's blogs I have gotten many ideas that I wouldn't have thought of on my own. Learning about the different hooks has also allowed me to try different methods and improve on the ones that I have already been doing. The book has also allowed me to continue to remember why I started teaching in the first place and the need to renew my excitement daily.

    1. I agree. The book blog has reassured me that I want to be a teacher, and not only do I want to teach kids, I want to build relationships with them that they are going to remember after they graduate. I don't really have an elementary school teacher that I can truly "remember." That's what I want with my students.

  18. This book study has made me realize that I am doing what I want to do with my career. Even though this semester has been hard and trying, I wouldn't trade or change it. With the book study, it is such a great way to have some ideas in my tool belt to start out as a new teacher. It has given me ideas to incorporate into my classroom and to use with my students.

  20. It has helped me be more self-aware of boring lessons. I think my teaching has been somewhat revitalized and I have a few new and interesting ideas to try out in the classroom. I want to do some staff development to try to help my co-workers to breathe some life into some stale lessons.

  21. I think Teaching Like A Pirate will help me be a better teacher by using some of the new hooks. It has helped me reconnect with some of the things I used to do when I had more time...before I adopted 4 girls. It has helped to spark my creative side. I think sometimes we get so busy with what we have to do and busy with life, that we forget to use our creative side. This book helps me remember that I am creative and have talents to make these "hooks" work.
I will spread the word by talking about it to other teachers. I have 2 teachers that want to read my book.

  22. I am really excited that when we get back from Christmas break and rereading the book all again I want to try all the engaging hooks that I believe will work on my students. I'm going to share this book with my wife as well, since she is a classroom teacher, I think she will get a lot of out of this too. I am hoping that when I try some of these hooks and that they work I'm going to share them with my colleagues in the building and see what they think. When I used the Mystery hook the other day the kids in my class were really wondering what I was hiding in my container. They could not stop asking and inquiring about what it could be until I revealed it at the end of class. They tried every way possible that they could think of to figure out what it was, even trying to read my body language and facial expressions it was really great to see them make an effort to figure out what I had.... Thank you for all the great ideas that every one presented from this entire blog. I'm sure that every one found some great ideas and insights from the book and among one another.

  23. I feel like I've added practical ideas for interventions to my toolbox. I tend to talk about movement, mnemonics, the chef, the techno wizard, and contests but starting at the end, and magic, and the challenging extra credit are ones I hadn't used. I've already shared some of my the gist of some of my favorite quotes like "On all of those days when you don’t have passion for your content, you must consciously make the decision to focus on your professional passion." and "Resist any movement that attempts to clone teachers and lessons and instead rejoice in the fact that it is your individuality and uniqueness that will always lead you to become the most effective teacher that you can be.", and "Don’t let the current overemphasis on standardized test scores lead to the loss of the teachable moment." I know some teachers who would take the information in this book and run with it. I may have to get a paper copy that I can share. I also see the "Learn Like a Pirate" is available on Kindle , I may have to check it out as well.

  24. I really liked the explanations of all of the different hooks. It made me realize that I already do some of them frequently, but it also made me realize that there are so many more that I could be doing. I think that by doing some of the other techniques in the book will help spread the word about teaching like a pirate. This was a great book, and I am excited about reading the next one next semester.
